The Concavenator skeleton STL captures the distinctive anatomy of this mid-Cretaceous theropod from Spain, known for its unusual dorsal vertebrae forming a prominent hump or sail. Lived approximately 130 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous, Concavenator provides critical insight into carcharodontosaurid diversity on the Iberian Peninsula. This digital file is optimized for resin 3D printing, enabling collectors and researchers to produce a detailed, scientifically accurate model of this rare Spanish dinosaur.

About Concavenator

Concavenator corcovatus was described in 2010 by paleontologists Francisco Ortega, Fernando Escaso, and colleagues based on fossils discovered in the Las Hoyas Formation of Cuenca, Spain. The holotype, housed at Museo de las Ciencias de Castilla-La Mancha, preserves a nearly complete skeleton that revealed an unusual tall elongated neural spine on the vertebrae of the mid-back, interpreted as a hump or sail-like structure. This anatomical feature distinguishes Concavenator from other carcharodontosaurids, a group of large-bodied carnivorous theropods.

Concavenator lived during the Early Cretaceous (Barremian stage, around 130 million years ago) in a freshwater wetland environment. It was a medium-sized predator, estimated at 6 meters in length, occupying a niche as an apex predator in the Iberian ecosystem. Its teeth and jaw morphology suggest it preyed on contemporaneous ornithopods and smaller dinosaurs. The Las Hoyas Formation is known for exceptional preservation, providing valuable context for the paleoecology and evolutionary significance of Concavenator within basal carcharodontosaurians.

Model Details

This Concavenator 3D model STL file includes a complete digital skeleton built from the published description of the holotype specimen. The file is broken into 12 parts optimized for resin 3D printers, facilitating detailed printing and assembly. The model measures approximately 25 cm in length at 1:24 scale, suitable for display and educational purposes. Unlike generic theropod files, this model accurately represents the distinctive hump formed by the elongated dorsal neural spines, as well as detailed cranial and limb anatomy based on original fossil data.

Printing Guide

For best results with this hump-backed dinosaur file, use a resin printer with at least 50 microns layer height. Orient the vertebral column and skull parts flat on the build plate to minimize support contact on detailed surfaces. Supports should be placed under overhangs of the neural spines and jaw to prevent warping. Post-print cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and careful curing in UV light will preserve fine details. Avoid excessive sanding on neural spines to maintain the characteristic morphology.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Concavenator skeleton STL file compatible with all resin printers?

The file is designed for standard SLA and MSLA resin printers and should be compatible with most models capable of 50-micron or finer resolution. Ensure your printer software supports STL files and has sufficient build volume for the parts.

What scale is the Concavenator 3D model designed at?

The model is scaled approximately 1:24, resulting in a total length of about 25 cm when assembled. This scale balances detail visibility and printability on consumer resin printers.

Can I use this file for commercial purposes?

No. This digital download is licensed for personal use only. Commercial use, including selling prints or models, requires licensing through Nova Studios.

How accurate is this model compared to the original fossil?

The model is based on the published descriptions and measurements of the holotype specimen. It reflects current scientific understanding, including the unique hump formed by the dorsal neural spines and other diagnostic features.

Does the file include all bones or just selected elements?

The STL contains a complete articulated skeleton, including skull, vertebrae, limbs, and pelvis, provided in multiple parts for ease of printing and assembly.
